Jozef Krupa, Lenka Novosedlíková & Dalibor Kocián
A festival commission, this project features a unique encounter of the drums, marimba and vibraphone in the even more uncommon setting of a Baroque hall in Bratislava City Gallery’s Mirbach Palace.
Dalibor Kocián AKA Stroon has been a lively presence on the Slovak music scene for more than a decade thanks to the vibraphone, his main instrument of choice, as well as a wide range of projects and collaborations carrying his handwriting. His work is characterized by a certain dreaminess, contemplation, an effort for zero gravity and conceptual thought. He garnered attention in 2010 through his debut Ruine Noire to highly positive acclaim. His earlier releases showed a search for his own ‘electronic’ language, increasingly backed by the vibraphone. To these, he later added the metal guitar, and afterwards began pairing his idiosyncratic electronica with a musical ensemble, soprano voice and choir. He peered into electronic music’s days bygone (Jarre, Oldfield) in symbiosis with the vibraphone, venturing into film music on his most recent album Metal Bubble Memories.
Lenka Novosedlíková studied musical composition and drums at the Bratislava Conservatory. She later pursued composition at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava, at Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo in Porto, and drums at JAMU in Brno. As a performer, she sat in Cluster ensemble, Musica falsa et ficta, Trio MCP, VENI ensemble, EnsembleSpectrum and elsewhere. Her music has been performed at festivals across Slovakia and beyond. She specializes in improvised music, with her recent project including concerts in Toronto alongside figures from the Canadian impro scene. She collaborates with the experimental theatre Non.Garde, played in the orchestra of the State Theatre Košice, and is co-founder and organizer of the Slovak festival Asynchrónie.
A highly versatile drummer, Jozef Krupa leaves his mark in diverse stylistic contexts from free jazz to punk. Closest to his heart are performing and creating free improvisation. He is also known in projects including Ankramu, Drť, Škvíry & Spoje, Stroon, Cluster Ensemble, and Bratislava Improvisation Orchestra.
