Amnesia Scanner A/V
A fascination with system vulnerability, information overload and sensory supercharge is the creative engine propelling Finnish-Berlin duo Amnesia Scanner (Ville Haimala & Martti Kalliala). At the heart of their work is an interest in how our post-digital present is mediated – including how the age of streaming reshapes how we listen (or perhaps just consume?) music. Amnesia Scanner reforged their debut mixtape AS Live [][][][][] into the audio drama Angels Rig Hook (2015) and Lexachast, a project featured at NEXT 2016. They slowly but steadily became synonymous with contemporary IDM (‘intelligent dance music’), skillfully combining genre fragments ranging from grime through trap and rave with dystopian-realistic narratives. On Another Life (2018, PAN) and Tearless (2020), they bastardize pop formalism through. deconstructed rave, delivering rough, corroded, synthetic and incredibly heavy sonic ruptures. The project’s already striking visual demeanor was expanded in 2023 through STROBE.RIP (2023, PAN) in collaboration with visual maverick Freeka Tet, who has worked with the likes of Oneohtrix Point Never. In his spare time, Ville Haimala likes to pair up with artists such as David Byrne, FKA Twigs, Holly Herndon, Anne Imhof. Martti Kalliala is an architect, critic and co founder of the cultural think tank Nemesis.
