Luc Gut & Rolf Hellat: OSZILOT
OSZILOT is a hybrid of sound installation and performance with visual and theatrical elements by the Swiss artistic duo Luc Gut & Rolf Hellat. Everyday objects suspended from strings are transformed into oscillating sound objects via acceleration and gyro sensors. The objects lose their everyday function and become animated and symbolic art objects creating rhythm patterns, soundscapes and abstract musical structures. They transform into living beings, ritual instruments, or futuristic manifestations of our imagination. From a musical perspective, the interesting thing about pendulums is that they swing back and forth in a constant rhythm, regardless of whether they swing strongly or only slightly Thus, pendulums can be used like a primitive analog drum machine, but with the rhythms shifting in organic ways, creating constantly changing rhythmic patterns. An archaic, physical world is combined with the possibilities of digital sound synthesis.
OSZILOT is an antithesis to the mainstream of today’s electronic music. Instead of maximal volume and sensationalist light shows, the focus is on the poetry in the mundane and in the subtle tones. In an almost alchemical process, sound breathes a soul into seemingly worthless objects. They transcend their everyday functionality and become living, symbolic art objects.
After the performance, the audience is invited to interact with the objects, transforming OSZILOT into an interactive installation.
