Two Americans with residence in Berlin and Vienna – multi-instrumentalist Jeff T Byrd and vocalist Michael Jeffrey Lee – describe their project Budokan Boys as a weird, acerbic version of pop music. Sitting somewhere between no-wave, dad-rock, hip-hop, r&b, spoken word and psych-folk, the duo manage to create music that’s funny, strange and deeply moving, all at the same time. Their latest album So Broken Up About You Dying – a record about death – is more cosmic, mysterious and heavier, but maintains that spirit of adventure and intensity that characterises their previous two records. Budokan Boys will perform their fierce and darkly-comic live show which combines off-kilter electronics, bizarre narratives, seedy saxophones and slide guitar.
